After months of pretending to be different from national Republicans, the local GOP just admitted the truth.

When a voter asked the West Hartford Republican Party how they differ from the Republicans running our federal government, their answer was simple and stunning:

“Why would we want to differ from success?”

That’s not just a quote. It’s a confession.

Because right now, the federal government controlled by these national Republicans is shut down. Families are facing furloughs, paychecks are on hold, and essential services are frozen. Meanwhile, the same party continues to push policies that reward the wealthy while working families shoulder the consequences.

If that’s what the local GOP calls success, then it’s clear where their values lie.

What “Republican Success” Really Looks Like

Let’s take a moment to unpack what “success” means to them. Under national Republican leadership, we’ve seen:

  • A government shutdown that leaves families and civil service workers in limbo.

  • Reckless spending and political brinkmanship that destabilize the economy and threaten vital services.

  • Deep cuts to Medicaid and other safety-net programs that millions of Americans rely on for health care.

  • Attacks on affordable health care, including efforts to roll back coverage protections and raise costs for working families.

  • Policies that prioritize corporations and the wealthy while leaving everyday people behind.

  • A culture of division that replaces problem-solving with partisan theater.

That’s the version of government the local GOP just called a “success.” They didn’t say they wanted to do things differently. They didn’t distance themselves from it. They embraced it.

Why It Matters Locally

Some may argue that national politics don’t reflect what happens at the municipal level, but this is proof that they do. When local leaders proudly align themselves with a national party defined by dysfunction and disregard for working people, those same values inevitably shape their approach to local decisions.

A Clear Choice for West Hartford

This election isn’t just about who sits on the town council and the board of education. It’s about what kind of community we want to be.

Do we want Republicans who echo the chaos of Washington, calling shutdowns, Medicaid cuts, and attacks on health care a “success”? Or do we want Democratic leaders who put people first by prioritizing affordability, safer streets, and our public schools?

The West Hartford GOP has shown us where they stand. Now, the voters of West Hartford get to decide where they do.
