In the immediate aftermath of the deadly shooting of Charlie Kirk, the West Hartford DTC joined leaders and organizations across the political spectrum (including the CT Democratic Party and CT Republican Party) in denouncing political violence without further inflaming partisan divisions.
In that spirit, we released the following statement: "We unequivocally condemn political violence. It has no place in America."
West Hartford Republicans (RTC) chose to do the opposite. Instead of trying to strike a bipartisan tone or unite the community, they unleashed a deeply divisive attack.
On their official X account, they post the following.

We are all for vigorous debate, but words matter, especially in this moment. It is profoundly hypocritical for the West Hartford Republican Party to criticize the state of our politics while simultaneously describing their political counterparts as "thoroughly corrupted by evil." Enough is enough.
Their decision to use this rhetoric in the midst of the current delicate political climate is reckless and irresponsible.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. In the wake of the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, the RTC chose to post a meme making fun of the heartbreaking situation.

West Hartford deserves better. Our town is more politically engaged than most. While we may have differing views on policies and politics, even strong disagreements, we must ensure that our public discourse is civil.
